Why You Should Get Involved in Theatre at Tremper

by Riley Voss

It is incredibly important to get involved during your time in high school. From the clubs and organizations available to join to the plethora of elective classes that can help you find out what you’re interested in, getting involved is what can make your high school experience one to remember. One of the best ways to get involved at Tremper is by participating in the Theatre Program. From the acting and drama classes available to take, to the shows that go on every year that you can audition for, the Theatre department is a welcoming and inclusive space where you will surely meet some of your closest friends. Participating in theatre is also a great way to learn many important life skills such as teamwork, leadership skills, and the ability to get a job done efficiently and effectively.

The Tremper Theatre program is an incredibly welcoming place, where you are able to confidently be yourself without judgment. Students from all different cliques and groups participate in theatre, allowing you to meet new people that you might have never known otherwise. I have met some of my best friends through the Theatre Program, and it is one of the only places where I feel comfortable to be my authentic self. Participating in a show together creates a special bond between you and everyone involved in the show. Friendships are formed that stand the test of time and you meet people who will stand by you no matter what. It is that close and genuine friendship that you get by participating in theatre that you cannot find anywhere else.  Continue reading Why You Should Get Involved in Theatre at Tremper

DeSantis is DeFuture

By Benjamin Rothove

In 2018, Ron DeSantis was elected the Governor of Florida by a margin of 30,000 votes.  Just four years later, he won reelection by 1.5 million votes.  As of November 2022, Ron DeSantis is the most popular politician in the entire country. How did this former Navy lieutenant become the most likely next President of the United States?

Ron DeSantis was born in Florida to a middle-class family; his mother was a nurse and his father installed Nielson TV rating boxes.  DeSantis was an excellent baseball player on top of being an outstanding student, eventually serving as the captain of Yale University’s baseball team, a distinction he shares with former President George Bush. After graduating, he briefly worked as a history teacher, before attending Harvard Law School with fellow conservative Ben Shapiro. Continue reading DeSantis is DeFuture

Admissions

by Jacob Puhr

Saturday, November 12th, was the closing night for Tremper’s Admissions.  The following article is less of a review as it is a combination of general thoughts I have on the play.  Before I indulge into the play’s subject matter, which will be this article’s main concern, I’d like to offer my praise to the actors and director.

Every one of these actors delivered a stellar performance.  Despite many of them being classmates, I could not see them as such, instead I only saw them as their characters.  I believe that is a testament to their abilities and skills.  Not once did I catch any obvious mistakes or even a misspoken line; the entire show seemed to be fantastically flawless.  I’d say Enzo (Bill) and Jack (Charlie) possessed the best chemistry together.  Enzo truly appeared as an adult where Jack expertly emerged with the energy of a teenager whose dreams had been crushed.  The two played off each other well and added believability to the play.

I believe Ghost, as Ella prefers to be called, (Sherri) was the heart of the play.  Her character doesn’t undergo a transformation, at least a major one, but as she sympathizes more with her disheartened son, we connect to her.  Even though we see her as a hypocrite (more on that later), we can’t help but like her as she defends Charlie when Bill harangues him during the rejection scene.  We perceive her as flawed while seeing her as a mother nonetheless who cares for her son.  Abby and Lucy were admirable in their respective roles as well.  Abby in particular added comedy to an often tense drama.

Lastly, I’d like to offer praise to Mr. Cicerale.  His play utilizes a very minimalist structure, a new experience for him.  There were only five actors and one set atop a small “runway style stage”; the play itself is held in the theater room instead of the large auditorium.  He made the most of little.  Perhaps the minimalist approach worked best as the audience was just feet away from the actors, as if we’re in the play itself.  Like Cicerale elaborated in the program, “The intimacy that this creates, along with forcing the audience to not only watch the actors, but in a way, face themselves” was enabled by the play’s personal location.  The simple set fit each scene to where nothing felt out of place, and his work with the costume designer paid off as each actor’s appearance further reinforced their character and our perception of them. The Significance of Taylor Swift’s Midnight Rain

By Addison Preston

Released three weeks ago, On October 21st 2022, a dynamic masterpiece titled Midnight Rain was released on all musical platforms. This incredible lyrical three minute long song, features a vocal destruction produced by Jack Antonoff, one of Swift’s fellow songwriters and producers. This song is one of the most heart shattering and influential songs off of her newest hit album Midnights. Despite the efforts of a contrasting poppy culture, the true meaning of the song relies on the chorus, and focuses on lyrics. Swift echoes her past lovers throughout this song, telling the tale of heartbreak and the differences in such relationships.

In her debut of this song, a remix of her vocals are presented to the listeners. However, in her most recent cover of this song, she is accompanied by playing the piano and acoustically singing this song. The chords harmonize and seethe the pain that she stresses throughout the song. The haunting G sharps, synchronizing with E flats dedicate the emotion of the words slipping from her lungs.  Continue reading The Significance of Taylor Swift’s Midnight Rain

Top Three Tim Burton Movies

By Lillian Liebke

Tim Burton is an extremely talented producer and artist who has been producing films and short stories since he was a child. He is very well known for his melancholy tones and settings, and famous actor Johnny Depp stars in most of Tim Burton’s films. But, which movies are his best works, and what makes them so captivating?

The third best is Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice is about a couple who dies and is trapped in their home, forced to live with the unbearable new family that moves in. They try to contact a ”bioexorcist” to rid the house of the family, and end up coming in contact with Beetlejuice. The live action film uses different effects and gory costumes to give a scary feel, but the overall tone is comedic. Tim Burton’s exotic costumes and amusing look on the afterlife gives the movie an exotic feel, and it’s amazing acting really pulls it all together.  Continue reading Top Three Tim Burton Movies

Best Pizza in Kenosha

By Daniel Chiappetta

The best pizza in Kenosha is Kaiser’s Pizza. I have been to a lot of the pizza restaurants in Kenosha. The other places like Villa D Carlo, Sal’s, Giordano, and Casa Capri can’t compete with the pizza that Kaiser’s has. So many other people would agree with me that Kaiser’s have the best pizza. This shows why Kaiser’s has the best pizza in Kenosha.

To begin with, me and my family have tasted and rated all of the main pizza places in Kenosha. After doing that I strongly believe that Kaiser’s have the best pizza in Kenosha. Kaiser’s white pizza is my favorite and is probably the best pizza I have ever tasted. If I rated all the pizza places in Kenosha out of ten I would give Kaiser’s a 9/10 and the next closest would be Giordano’s and I would give them a 7/10. This showcases why Kaiser’s have the best pizza in Kenosha.  Continue reading Best Pizza in Kenosha

The Hallmark Hell We Live In

by Zachary Brey

Modern Christmas movies have gone to trash. It’s all the same plot over and over again. Here let me give you an example. Let’s make our “own” story. Sarah will be our stand in character. Sarah is a single woman living in a small town working in the big city. Sarah’s mother is always complaining about Sarah being alone on Christmas. Sarah says she is content with being alone, although deep down inside she is not. Insert some subplot about her friend that is unnamed, but a comedic relief.  Blah, blah, blah, skip some important baloney. Boom, the end of the movie resolves with Sarah with the love of her life, as her unnamed friend is there to watch the enjoyment.

At the end of the day, it is too cliché. If you read that story and went, “huh, sounds like one I know.” Yeah,  it’s probably because it is. Modern movies rely on the same cookie cutter (pun intended) plots. It’s all the same nowadays. Honestly if you want to see it in a more visual perspective, we’ve hit a plateau on Christmas movies. We’re not improving their style, or not changing it up, they are being made as cash grabs. If you want a change maybe make a plot yourself that involves Christmas becoming a complete disaster, but the main characters work it through or something. Like the tree lights on fire and grandma dies, and the turkey was over cooked. But the main characters see that it is not the materialistic things that make Christmas, well Christmas, but the fact they are all celebrating it all together. And with high confidence I can tell you that’s probably a plot already for a movie. How about this, STOP making Christmas movies.

Why You Should Get Involved in Choir at Tremper

by Riley Voss

Choir is a greatly fulfilling experience. Being part of a close-knit community where everyone comes together to make music and have fun is incredibly rewarding. The Tremper choir program is a great example of this. Joining choir at Tremper will provide you with an amazing sense of community where you can make lasting friendships and memories while working towards the goal of bettering yourself as a singer.

Choir is a great bonding experience, as you have to rely on and trust the other members of your section in order to succeed and produce great music together. Because of this, I have made great friendships during my time in Tremper Choir, finding people who will stand by me no matter what and value me both as a choir member and as a person. These friendships have been some of the strongest that I have made throughout my time in high school, and I have made lasting memories with these people over my years here. From the Madrigal Singers retreat, to going to see musicals such as Wicked and Come From Away together, the people that I have met through choir are truly some of my best friends. Strong friendships like this are important to have during your time in high school, and being in choir will give you so many great friends who you will likely want to remain in touch with long after you graduate. Gold Label’s New Release

By Ian Valdez

Following the release of I’ll Say my Line, Gold Label hops back in the studio to record their second studio album. For Evan and Ian this is their first song that they are recording with the band, Evan stating “it’s honestly so fun and nerve racking to record, but I’m glad I can get this opportunity with such cool guys.” As the band prepares for their show later this month, they want to pump out as much content as they can.

Gold Label’s refined sound is something that the band is very proud of, but with their new song, they are working very hard on perfecting the song. They’ve upgraded their instruments, amps, and got better microphones. They are very serious about putting out a great sound that everyone will love. Their intention has always been to put out music that is new and refreshing, they’ve always kept to their roots with every song that they’ve written and have not tried to change for anyone else’s standards. Who is Thomas Sowell?

by Benjamin Rothove

Thomas Sowell was born at the height of the Great Depression, grew up in Harlem, and dropped out of high school.  How did he become a professor at Cornell University, write more than 45 books, and become the leading intellectual of the Conservative movement?

Thomas Sowell was born in North Carolina, but his father died before he was born and his mother was unequipped to raise him.  Sowell never knew his mother and was instead raised by his great aunt.  At a young age, Sowell and his family relocated to Harlem, New York, where he would attend school.  He excelled academically and qualified to attend a prestigious high school in the city.

Unfortunately, his family ran into monetary issues and his home life deteriorated, forcing him to leave high school at the age of 17.  Sowell worked various jobs, at one point trying out for the Brooklyn Dodgers, until he was drafted into the Marines.  He never saw Korea because he worked as a photographer, but his time in the military shaped his future.  Continue reading Who is Thomas Sowell?

Why Do We Yawn?

by Jacob Puhr

Everyone yawns. In fact, while writing this sentence I yawned.  But why?  We all know that when we’re tired and bored we find ourselves yawning.  Once again, I’ve yawned while talking about why we yawn, and now I’m yawning once more.  The more I find myself yawning non-stop while writing about yawning non stop, I wonder why?  Believe it or not scientists lack a shared, definitive consensus of why we yawn.

Instead of answers, theories are proposed as to why we yawn.  The seemingly most accepted one is that yawning regulates brain temperature.  When yawning, blood flow increases.  As this flow increases, heat is more capable of dissipating and our eyes water which releases heat.  Sleep Foundation referenced, in one article, several studies that revealed when participants placed a warm pack on their heads, they yawned more than those with a cold pack.  On top of those studies, another showed that people yawn more during summer than winter, also adding evidence to the theory we yawn in warmer environments to help cool the brain. Ways To Better Your Mental Health

By Lillian Liebke

With all that has been going on in our society and our world as a whole on top of all of the little things that go on in daily life, focusing on your mental health is one of the most important things you can do. Taking little steps throughout your daily life and slowly getting into a positive routine can really change your mindset, and it can be as easy as little self-care steps or daily affirmations. But what are some things you can do to get started on the right foot?

First, start your day off with some productive habits. Starting off your day with sunlight and a light meal starts your mind and stomach the minute that you wake up, making you more ready for the day. Also getting into habits like making your bed, showering, doing a skincare routine, and cleaning up your living area. A clean space around you leads to a more productive day. Prioritizing things you have to do throughout your day with a daily to-do list gives numerous benefits like keeping your priorities in check and being able to keep an eye on any events going on that day.  Continue reading Ways To Better Your Mental Health

Ms. Lauryn Hill

by Malia Esposito

Music is the best thing in the world. I believe music shapes who we are as people. It connects us to our personalities and inner feelings. Music also helps people connect to their moods. There’s only a small number of people who don’t have a favorite music genre or artist, but I think those people haven’t discovered a connection to a style they like. I love R&B music and artists like Lauryn Hill. Not only do I love her music and voice, but I feel a connection to her poetry. She speaks for the youth and women in the music industry.

Hill was one of the first female R&B singers to win best R&B album. I remember the day my mom introduced me to her music at thirteen. I had no idea how much she impacted and changed my mood in many scenarios. By listening to the artist I love I feel calm and feeling good again. Lauryn Hill first became an icon with her works with the Fugees in the album The Score. The group rose to fame with their album The score and was one of the best selling albums of the 90s. The album has seventeen songs, my favorite being a cover of Bob Marley & The Wailers No Woman, No Cry. Another great song from the album is Zealots. Continue reading Ms. Lauryn Hill

My Declaration of Independence

By Bailey Chrabascz

We, as the National Association of Stressed teenagers, declare our independence from all homework. Homework restricts our ability to do things after school. It causes stress, anxiety, frustration, and sleep deprivation. We would like to separate ourselves from homework for all of the reasons listed above.

I think we can all agree that the best solution would be to remove homework all together. Students go from doing school eight hours a day, five days a week to going home just to do more school. The NAST (National Association of Stressed Teenagers) has decided that the only exception to having no homework is if you don’t get your work done in class. The kids that choose to slack off in school should not get the privilege of being homework free. Teachers and staff should only be allowed to give homework to students who don’t do their work during school hours.  Continue reading My Declaration of Independence

Why Marvel is Overrated

by Riley Voss

Marvel is an incredibly popular franchise, with millions of fans all over the world. With over thirty movies and series to watch, and an endless amount of comics dating all the way back to 1939, Marvel has a rich and storied history. However, with all of the lore to keep track of, Marvel becomes a hard franchise to follow and be a fan of. That is why I feel that Marvel is overrated. The sheer amount of characters and stories and the amount of work needed to learn about all of them make Marvel not worth following anymore.

For fourteen years, Marvel has been releasing movies in “phases”, slowly telling the convoluted and confusing stories of their hundreds of Marvel characters. From Iron Man all the way to Thor: Love and Thunder, the MCU has released over thirty movies and shows since 2008, and plans to release up to thirty-seven more over the course of their “Multiverse Saga”. This is a lot to keep track of, with over seven hundred characters with different backstories and adventures, all represented in the MCU. With so many stories to keep up with, and new movies coming out every year, it can be difficult for even the most avid fans to stay current. This is part of what makes Marvel so overrated and not worth following: new fans could end up spending months, even years catching up with all of the lore in the MCU alone. It is incredibly difficult to be a well-educated fan of Marvel, even for someone who has been following it all their life. Continue reading Why Marvel is Overrated

A Brief Recap of the Wisconsin Midterm Candidates

by Jacob Puhr

Next Tuesday is election day, where a third of the Senate, the entire House and numerous local and state offices are up for grabs.  In this essay, I’ll be focusing on the elections that I’m a constituent of.  The midterm elections could be pivotal in shaping President Biden’s remaining two years, especially if Republicans take control of the House, which historically speaking, is a likelihood.  All eyes are on several swing states and their Senate races, as just one seat flipping could change the balance of power in the legislative branch, and severely affect Biden’s policy goals.  Despite what happens in the House and Senate, realistically, the biggest changes you’ll experience will come from the local elections we so quickly disregard.

Clerk of Circuit Courts : The Democrat incumbent is Rebecca Mentink, who is opposed by Republican Zach Rodriguez.  How on earth is this position political?  No idea, but welcome to present day politics.  She’s served three terms in this role and has claimed bipartisan support.  Oddly enough, I personally have seen multiple Republican households with a Mentink sign.  Mentink has criticized Rodriguez for never writing a budget and lacking any meaningful experience.  Among other things, she criticized his attendance record and lack of bipartisan support.  On a final note, Mentink participated in a live stream at the Kenosha Creative Space, but Rodriguez was a no show.

The Republican challenger, Zach Rodriguez, is the chair of the Kenosha Judiciary and Law Enforcement Committee and the Kenosha County Board supervisor for District 8.  He’s been endorsed by multiple county board members, Congressman Bryan Steil and David Zoerner.  As a county board member, he’s fought for amendments allowing carry of concealed weapons in county facilities. Some priorities of his will be maintaining accurate record keeping, efficiently collecting fees, and ensuring equal access to the courts for all residents.  He’s also attacked Mentink for her attendance record.             Continue reading A Brief Recap of the Wisconsin Midterm Candidates

Top Three Female Artists

By Lillian Liebke

There has been an ongoing debate about who the best female artist is for decades. But who really is the best? These three women are the best female artists in the industry currently, and here’s why.

The third best has to be Billie Holiday. Billie Holiday was an African American Jazz singer when slavery and the Civil Rights Movement was in its prime. Billie Holiday wrote numerous songs speaking out against the violence towards African Americans in America, her most popular being Strange Fruit. In this song, Billie sings about how African Americans are taken off the streets and hung off of trees in the public for everyone to see, comparing them to a “strange” fruit. She sings about the gory details of the horrible acts of violence towards her community, and her songs helped many African American people stay hopeful that one day the world will change. Billie Holiday died in 1959, five years into the Civil Rights Movement.  Continue reading Top Three Female Artists

A Successful First Show

By Aleks Jankovic

Local Kenosha indie band “Gold Label” has just played their first public concert this past weekend at the Creative Space, and the turnout was much higher than initially expected. With 170 people in attendance, the band was shocked to see the amount of support they had received from their community, and were nothing but excited to continue their trajectory.

Following the debut of their single I’ll Say My Line, the band was excited to play their first show in front of a major audience. “Our past two experiences playing live were house parties for a fairly small crowd, so we were pumped to finally start playing for the public and hopefully increase attention,” said drummer Jack Salisbury. The set-up process was fairly smooth, with little to no technical issues during the sound check. Continue reading A Successful First Show

Why College?

by Julie Jaworski

While growing up, you grow to hate school. You go through twelve years, just to have to do more. For many people, post secondary education is not in their plan. There is no problem with not wanting to further your education, but there are many benefits to doing so.

Let’s begin with why college is NOT necessary. There are many options after high school, things like the military and trade school. Even without going into those things, there are people who are still just as successful without all the schooling as someone who got a Masters degree.  Continue reading Why College?

Justin Fields

By Josiah Finkler

Justin Fields is the newest quarterback to the Bears football team, and with his second season playing he is looking really good. The Bears are all about reconstruction at this point, they are trying to get new players and build a SuperBowl contending team. Justin Fields is one of the top prospecting players on the Bears team and he is getting better every day.

For example, last year the Bears went 6-11 throughout the entire season. Not very good for a football team, but this year the Bears are currently 3-5 which isn’t terrible and are looking for a spot in the playoffs as of right now. Justin Fields, who is new to the whole NFL league is looking really good this year and he is really taking charge of the Bears offense and scoring touchdowns. Although Justin has had a lot of bad games and a lot of mistakes throughout the season, he learns from his mistakes and that is what makes him a better player. He wasn’t very good last year as you can see he went 6-11 and had nearly 10 interceptions and only 9 touchdowns which two of them were rushing touchdowns. This year he has only 6 interceptions and already 10 touchdowns and the season isn’t even over yet.  Continue reading Justin Fields

Stranger Things

By Amaiya Diaz

Stranger Things is one of the most well-known shows on Netflix. The popular franchise first took off on July 15, 2016. The Duffer Brothers, the show’s creators, came up with the idea and got the script for the first season in 2012. The show takes place in Hawkins, Indiana, in 1983, following a group of kids, teens, and adults on their mission to find the missing character Will Byers. Will went missing in the first episode of season one, and following his disappearance, a new character Eleven was introduced. She was discovered by Will’s friends, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin while they were looking for Will.

Eleven was introduced as being a more interesting character. At first, she seemed to just be a runaway boy, yet the friend group soon learned she escaped from a lab. Eleven revealed to Mike her telekinesis powers in episode 2 of the first season “The Weirdo on Maple Street”. Throughout the first season, all of the characters continue to try and find Will Byers, but eventually, they learn that Eleven is the key to helping find him. Eleven is connected to an alternate universe that they named “The Upside Down” after the kid’s favorite game Dungeons and Dragons.  Continue reading Stranger Things

Lionel Messi

By Daniel Chiappetta

Lionel Messi is the best soccer player of all time. Messi has played professional soccer for twenty years. He holds multiple records. He has played with some of the best teams of all time. These are some reasons why Messi is the greatest soccer player of all time.

To begin with, Messi holds seventeen records. Some of these records are 7 Ballon d’Ors (Best Soccer player in the World Award), most La Liga goals ever with 474 goals, most goals in a calendar year with 91, and Messi holds the record for the most goals and assists combined ever in history with 1,129. Why Standardized Tests are an Unfair Assessment of Students’ Grades

by Riley Voss

Almost every year of a student’s schooling, a standardized test is given in order to assess the progress that students are making in their education. Whether that be MAPs testing in elementary school, the Forward Exam in middle school, or the ACT and SAT in high school, students have been forced into these tests for years. However, these tests are an inaccurate assessment of a student’s true academic performance in school. They create extra stress that causes students to underperform and put great students who are simply bad test-takers at a disadvantage, creating an unfair assessment of their academic skills.

Every year students are given a different standardized test to worry about. Whether that be the  MAPs or Forward Exams, or the more important ACT and SAT, there is always some kind of standard issue test that creates extra stress for students. Giving these tests creates a tremendous amount of worry for students from age seven to seventeen, as they stress about getting a good grade and showing that they are good students. However, this mindset often causes students to underperform on the test. Although they may be a model student in every day class, a low score on the ACT due to stress can cause colleges to get the wrong idea about students. An A and B student with a fourteen on the ACT may seem less desirable than a student with the same grades and a score of twenty-eight. A low ACT score that is likely due to pent up stress and anxiety should not be so important to a student’s acceptance to college, as it was an unfair assessment of the student’s true academic potential. Continue reading Why Standardized Tests are an Unfair Assessment of Students’ Grades

Steve Lacy’s Meltdown

By Ian Valdez

Steve Lacy, a popular musician that has recently been in the spotlight of popular music and internet sensation, with his recent album becoming a big hit on TikTok, with songs including Bad Habit, and Static  people have been using their creative ideas to Lacy’s music which has made him even more popular recently than his 2010 debut. Lacy has been touring showing off his music to those who love his music but there has been much controversy with his performances, with many people who are actually fans, and even Lacy himself expressing their annoyance with people going to the shows, while only knowing the TikTok parts.

During one of Steve Lacy’s performances he was singing his song Bad Habit and towards the end of the song he was fed up with the dead crowd and people only singing the parts from TikTok, this frustrated Lacy and he freaked out, telling the DJ to stop playing the song and he walked off, but before he went off the stage he went up to a fan and and smashed their phone off the ground. This is a very strange act for Lacy considering he is a very nice respectable person, but this outburst is raising eyebrows and making fans question Lacy as a person.  Continue reading Steve Lacy’s Meltdown

The Embargo on Cuba: A Legacy of Failure

by Benjamin Rothove

The American embargo against Cuba prevents American companies and some businesses with ties to the United States from trading with Cuba.  The United States first instituted an arms embargo against Cuba in 1958 during an armed rebellion led by Fidel Castro against the US-backed regime.  However, the arms embargo backfired because the rebels were not being supplied by the US, which resulted in Fidel Castro’s socialist government coming to power in 1959.  Within three months of being in power, the US began plotting to overthrow Castro.  Congress did not wish to lift the embargo, and the Cuban government began purchasing weapons from the Soviet Union in 1960.  The US reduced the import quota of Cuban sugar, and the US government cut exports of crude oil to the country in late 1960.  This led to the regime nationalizing all three oil refineries in Cuba, and one of the final acts of the Eisenhower administration was to sever all diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba in January 1961.

After the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cuban government officially declared itself Marxist.  Congress passed the Foreign Assistance Act which allowed the president to impose a trade embargo if necessary, and the Organization of American States suspended Cuba.  Sanctions were then imposed on Cuba by the OAS, and president John F. Kennedy officially began the embargo in early 1962 and expanded it in late 1962.  Following the Cuban Missile Crisis, travel restrictions were enacted and all Cuban assets in the US were frozen. Plastic Pollution

By Reese Mattner

Plastic pollution has a giant impact on marine life. Over 800 different species have been impacted by plastic being thrown into the ocean. Fish, seabirds, sea turtles, and marine mammals can all be tangled in plastic or have consumed plastic. Humans are also being affected by this too. When different animals in the ocean digest plastic some of it can turn up into seafood that we eat. Therefore we are consuming plastic when we eat seafood.

Many sea turtles have been affected by plastic. Sea turtles eat plastic thinking they have eaten enough and are full, but all they have consumed is plastic. Since this happens a lot of them die from starvation. Reproduction has slowed down because of people littering on nesting beaches. Turtles will not hatch or grow because the temperature is being changed by plastic build up on beaches.  Continue reading Plastic Pollution

Insane Clown Posse

By Lillian Liebke

There have been numerous controversial bands and artists throughout the years, but do some cross the line? Artists like Marilyn Manson, Lady Gaga, and even Elvis Presley all use shock value when they perform, but Insane Clown Posse really pushes it like no other band. Insane Clown Posse’s songs are some of the most controversial in the whole industry, but they are not as scary as they seem.

Insane Clown Posse consists of two members, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope, who both wear black and white clown face paint as their image. The black and white face paint then transferred onto their fanbase called the “Juggalo’s.” A majority of Insane Clown Posse’s songs consist of vulgar language and details of disturbing events.  Continue reading Insane Clown Posse

Why the Los Angeles Lakers are Bombing

By Aleks Jankovic

The NBA has recently returned for yet another season, and the Lakers team is having a very rough start. Starting the season 0-3 with terrible shooting efficiency and defense, the Lakers squad is looking like they could miss the playoffs for the second year in a row, and become a bottom tier team in the western conference.

Ever since their championship run during the 2020 bubble year, the Lakers have had trouble with 3-point shooting efficiency and having players with good shot selection. Russell Westbrook has taken a steep decline ever since joining the team, with his points per game and shooting percentage both steadily decreasing as he continues on the team. In these first three games specifically, Westbrook is averaging just 10 points per game on 28% field goal shooting, and a measly 8% from the 3-point line. Although the Lakers two main superstars, LeBron James and Anthony Davis, are continuing to put up good numbers among their games, their shot selection and low 3-point shooting percentage are just not up to standard with today’s NBA, where offense relies heavily on 3-point shots.  Continue reading Why the Los Angeles Lakers are Bombing

Queen

By Madison Nannini

Queen is hands down, one of the best bands to ever exist in human history. Queen made their first appearance in the early 1970’s with the release of their first song, Keep Yourself Alive. Instantly, Queen grew a fan base. Later that same year, Queen released their first album ironically titled Queen.

Queen went on to release many more hit songs and make more albums. But one of the most impressive things Queen ever did was take a symphonic instrumental, and put rock over it, for almost six minutes. Of course I am talking about the most memorable song Queen ever released, Bohemian Rhapsody. With Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen had not only released a song that changed the ideals of Rock and Roll, but they had changed the music industry. It was a risky move to release a song of that duration and with a symphonic sound rather than a total 70’s rock and roll song. But as Queen expected, the song hit the charts and is still the most memorable and admired song by Queen. The legendary use of electronics, vocals, and instrumentals, this song single-handedly changed the music industry forever. Of course Queen had other great hits like We Will Rock You (1977), Killer Queen (1974), Crazy Little Thing Called Love (1980), We Are The Champions (1977), Another One Bites The Dust (1980), and Under Pressure (1981) Continue reading Queen

Steve Lacy: Part 2

The year after the release of his debut studio album, Apollo XXI in 2019, Lacy followed up with another intriguing album, The Lo-fis, which is composed of 15 tracks, ranging from 43 second songs to more normal, 3 minute songs. After the technical beginning of his career, Steve has stayed true to his philosophy of making music he likes and enjoys, and being sure to experiment with his sound, and with this album he continues this. He starts the album off with a confident track, boasting about his demeanor while at a party(Atomic Vomit), where two tracks later, it’s a more melancholy song describing the nature of change, and leaving people behind in That’s no Fun.

He shifts his tone and manipulates the topics of his songs all throughout the album, highlighting the versatility he has, although he still manages to keep the same themes of love and loss in all of these tracks. In Jars of It, Infrunami, and Uuuu, he uses one or two verse songs to put out the message of his love for this girl with interesting and appealing lyrics, like in Infrunami, where he sings:

“Girl, you’re the one I want

You’re the one I need I’m beggin’ you, please

Can you come back to me?

‘Cause I was blind to see

That you were right in front of me” Continue reading Steve Lacy: Part 2

Leonel Messi

By Josiah Finkler

Leo Messi is one of the best soccer players the world has ever seen. He isn’t that big of a person, but he sure fights hard on the pitch and he has shown the world that you don’t need to be the biggest player on the pitch to be the best. Messi has shown and taught the world so much from soccer, and it is every kid’s dream to once play like him in the professional leagues someday.

Firstly, Messi has 41 titles, four champions league titles, six Ballon D’Or, and many other trophies that are too long to go on about. Messi has spent most of his career with Barcelona, a Spanish football team that was always one of the better teams in the world, especially with Messi on the team. Barcelona would always be feared as they went on to win their league title for multiple years in a row and often won the title every other year. As of now though, Messi is now on PSG, a French football team with some of the best players in the world and a lot of Messi’s old teammates. Messi is 35 years old and has played the game for 17 consecutive years, and has accomplished so much for the football industry. Continue reading Leonel Messi

Why It’s Important to Get Involved During Your Time in High School

by Riley Voss

High school is an interesting time, and it can be extremely stressful. Between keeping up with school work and trying to maintain a social life, many students find it difficult to have fun and make memories during their high school career. That is why it is incredibly important to find ways to get involved, whether that be in sports, music, theater, or any of the many offerings presented to students. Being a part of these activities gives students the opportunity to create lasting memories and make new friends while simultaneously gaining skills such as teamwork, leadership, and cooperation that can benefit you after high school into the future.

There are a plethora of different clubs and organizations to join at Tremper, and getting involved in any of them will gain you great friends and memories that are likely to last. For example, joining a sport fosters a sense of community and belonging, and makes you part of a team of people who will always have your back. If you get involved in music groups such as the Madrigal Singers or the Golden Strings, you will meet new people with similar interests and create lasting friendships and connections through making music together. Getting involved in theater is also a great way to make some of the strongest connections and friendships, as you learn to trust and rely on others for the show to run smoothly. The people that you meet through these activities could very well become some of your closest friends, and those friendships are likely to last throughout the rest of your time in high school. Election Rundown

By Benjamin Rothove

Wisconsin: Polling is looking very good for incumbent Senator Ron Johnson.  Johnson went from trailing his opponent, Mandela Barnes, this summer to a steady lead in the last few weeks.  Barnes is increasingly unpopular in the state, with ads highlighting his record on crime and many past controversies.  Johnson is not particularly popular in the state either due to stepping back on his commitment to serve only two terms.

On the other hand, the Governor’s race is a tossup.  Incumbent Governor Tony Evers is in a dead-heat race with challenger Tim Michels.  Michels narrowly won a contested primary, so he has spent much of his time trying to ignite the Republican base.  Evers has been facing trouble as well, primarily due to attacks on his record with education. The Exorcist: The Most Horrifying Horror Movie?

by Jacob Puhr

The Exorcist is more than a movie.  When it premiered in 1973 it became a cultural event, one that possessed the country in a ghoulish grasp.  Interviews at the time featured responses not unlike the following, “It’s something I never saw in my whole entire life. It’s something different, and I went to a lot of movies but I’ve never seen anything like this myself.”  The Exorcist would mark a pivotal time in cinematic history, one where what was considered acceptable changed; it’s no coincidence that gory slasher movies rose to prominence after The Exorcist’s release.  The terrors and horrors packed into this film resulted in audience member’s fainting, hyperventilating, running out of the theater and some even had heart attacks.  So what about this film evoked such fear never before felt in cinematic history and is truly the most horrific film ever made?

Many movie goers today can happily remark they’ve never fainted watching a movie in the theater.  The idea of even running out of the theater is uncommon among most moviegoers.  However, those who dared view The Exorcist experienced just the opposite.  The film was so agonizing to watch that theaters kept smelling salts on hand as noted by The Film School Rejects.  Andrew Klavan, an author (an avid ghost story lover) and commentator, noted on his show while attending the movie with his religious friend, the ladder hyperventilated and had to be brought out of the theater into a lobby of sick, crying audience members. Climate Change

By Reese Mattner

Climate change is affecting humans and animals. So many species are endangered because of climate change. Some animals that are affected include polar bears, snow leopards, giant pandas, tigers, monarch butterflies, green sea turtles, penguins and many more. Sea-level rise, increased storms are affecting sea turtles when they are nesting. Many beaches are becoming dangerous for sea turtles especially because there are certain types that are already endangered. The arctic ecosystem has been affected more than other ecosystems.

Climate change has brought many health issues to people. Extreme weather events including, heatwaves, storms, floods, and more can affect human health. Anaplasmosis, Anthrax, Antibiotic-resistant infections, Cryptosporidiosis, Dengue these are just five examples of the many diseases that may occur. Hurricanes are getting stronger due to climate change. Stronger hurricanes can lead to destruction of coral reefs which can kill marine life. There are thousands of species that rely on coral reefs to survive. Certain temperatures cause a dry climate which can cause wildfires. Flooding can cause waterborne diseases, injuries, and chemical hazards. Oceans have also been becoming more acidic and toxic.  Continue reading Climate Change

Top Three Horror Films

By Lillian Liebke

Horror movies have been loved by many for decades, but what really makes a horror movie “scary?” Most scary movies will at least make you a little uncomfortable, but which movies really pushed the limits? These three movies are the most gruesome and unnerving movies ever made. Spoilers ahead!

The third scariest movie is Hush. Hush is about a deaf writer who lives by herself in a house in the middle of the woods. While at home in the middle of writing her first professional book, the main character is met with a picture of her taken inside the house sent to her computer. The movie quickly turns south when she realizes that someone has broken into her house, and she now has to defend herself against this attacker. The character being deaf gives the movie such a darker feel, as she uses her other senses to defend herself from getting murdered.

The second scariest movie is Midsommer. Midsommer is about a girl who’s parents and sister all die in the same accident, so she goes on a vacation with her boyfriend and two of their friends. They go on vacation to this remote spot where a small community lives, but they soon find out that the small community they are living with is a cult. The whole film is unnerving as we see the insides of the cult and the rituals that they partake in. From suicide to giant reproduction barns, we see the inside of a dystopian society that is not that far from previous historical situations.  Continue reading Top Three Horror Films

How Gold Label Swept the Nation

By Aleks Jankovic

The newest indie band out of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Gold Label has topped the charts with their newest single I’ll Say My Line, which was released on streaming services October 7th. Led by frontman Aleks Jankovic, the band will be playing their first show in several months at the Kenosha Creative Space on October 28th.

Lasting a little over an hour in length, the setlist will have a nice balance between original songs and covers. In anticipation of the long awaited concert, we conducted an interview with the members of the band about their goals and aspirations playing at the Creative Space. “I think our main mission is to spread our name out to more people and start making connections,” stated drummer Jack Salisbury. Along with getting their name out to more of the public, they want to try and have fun with the show at the same time. “I’d love to just get out there and have fun with the show, and try not to take it too seriously. It’s all about enjoying ourselves at the end of the day,” said bassist Evan Arneson.  Continue reading How Gold Label Swept the Nation

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: A Review on the Best Anime and Manga Series (Part 2)

By Ollie Campbell

In my second part of the review, I will go over part 4(Diamond is Unbreakable) and part 5 (Golden Wind). There are three more parts, 7 and 8 are not animated yet, and part 6 is having its last batch of episodes released in December of this year. I have not finished part 6 yet and started to read 7. I have yet to touch 8, so I will be leaving those reviews out. Although I have no opinion on them yet, I’ve heard amazing reviews on them, especially part 7 (Steel Ball Run). My personal favorite part of the series so far is Part 4.

Diamond is Unbreakable follows our main character, Josuke Higashikita, in the Japanese town called Morioh. Josuke is the love child resulting from an affair Joseph Joestar(part 2’s main protagonist) had. We learn more about the origins of stands throughout part 4. Most of part 4 is narrated by a side character named Koichi Hirose. We are first introduced to him on his way to school, and Koichi bumps into Jotaro Kujo(part 3’s main protagonist). Jotaro traveled to Morioh in search of Josuke, wanting to learn about him and see if Josuke possesses a stand. Jotaro ends up being right, as Josuke has Joestar blood in him. All Joestars had possessed a stand after Dio Brando stole Jonathan Joestar’s body and used it to get a stand. Jotaro decides to stay in Morioh longer than expected as he also found an arrow in Morioh. The arrow may be the answer to how people initially earn stands.  Continue reading JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: A Review on the Best Anime and Manga Series (Part 2)

Steve Lacy: Part 1

By Joe Mendoza

After the release of a couple promising singles and a demo, Steve Lacy, a young 19 year old at the time, showed his potential in the music industry in the late 2010’s. Beginning with C U Girl, Some, and Dark Red, Lacy stirred up the pot, and with the creative beats and appealing lyrics, he began to build a fanbase who immediately fell in love with his romantic sound. Without much wait time, Steve Lacy’s Demo dropped on February 24, 2017, lasting 13 minutes and consisting of six songs that were produced exclusively with his iPhone. The feel of his music was obvious, with most of his songs having a smooth beat which made you wonder how on Earth it was made on GarageBand and a voice even smoother. Many of his songs were full with the heartbreak, confusion, and blindness that comes with love, and with his demo getting a lot of attention, Lacy soon found himself with a combination of fans from his band, The Internet, and new fans who happened to run into his music.

Following up such a unique and creative demo would prove to be a challenge to most, yet with the release of three more singles, N Side, Playground, and Hate CD, he teased his next album, and with his more developed sound, Apollo XXI released on May 24, 2019. This album kept a lot of the same themes of young love and what comes with it, and his smooth sound was put on display with slow, passionate songs like N Side, Lay Me Down, and Love 2 Fast. He also experimented more with his sound, providing his audience with a violin ballet in Amandla’s Interlude, and touching on the rap side of music with the last song on the album, Outro Freestyle/4ever. This album stamped Lacy’s spot in the music industry as a solo artist, and he was able to step out of the box of just being a guitarist for The Internet. He generated a lot of talk after this album, and his fan base only grew after.  Continue reading Steve Lacy: Part 1
