In my second part of the review, I will go over part 4(Diamond is Unbreakable) and part 5 (Golden Wind). There are three more parts, 7 and 8 are not animated yet, and part 6 is having its last batch of episodes released in December of this year. I have not finished part 6 yet and started to read 7. I have yet to touch 8, so I will be leaving those reviews out. Although I have no opinion on them yet, I’ve heard amazing reviews on them, especially part 7 (Steel Ball Run). My personal favorite part of the series so far is Part 4.
Diamond is Unbreakable follows our main character, Josuke Higashikita, in the Japanese town called Morioh. Josuke is the love child resulting from an affair Joseph Joestar(part 2’s main protagonist) had. We learn more about the origins of stands throughout part 4. Most of part 4 is narrated by a side character named Koichi Hirose. We are first introduced to him on his way to school, and Koichi bumps into Jotaro Kujo(part 3’s main protagonist). Jotaro traveled to Morioh in search of Josuke, wanting to learn about him and see if Josuke possesses a stand. Jotaro ends up being right, as Josuke has Joestar blood in him. All Joestars had possessed a stand after Dio Brando stole Jonathan Joestar’s body and used it to get a stand. Jotaro decides to stay in Morioh longer than expected as he also found an arrow in Morioh. The arrow may be the answer to how people initially earn stands.
At the beginning, Jotaro and Josuke battle a fleeing criminal, who also happens to be a stand user. Jotaro and Josuke defeat him and he gets turned into a statue by Josuke’s stand. Josuke’s stand is able to disassemble and assemble objects, and can also heal people. His stand name is Crazy Diamond(a reference to Pink Floyd). The statue remains a huge joke in the series and in the fandom. After this, Josuke finds out who has the arrow, and he battles him, along with his brother. Josuke beats him and befriends his brother, Okuyasu. They become best friends for the rest of part 4. Before Josuke can get the arrow, a mysterious stand steals the arrow. The first half of the show follows the characters trying to retrieve the arrow. They eventually get the arrow back and can now study its powers and origins.
The second half of the show is my favorite. We are introduced to a new villain, named Yoshikage Kira. He is a serial killer, and possesses a stand called Killer Queen(a reference to the band, Queen). He uses his stand to kill his victims. The stand’s ability is able to blow up anything it touches. Kira also has a hand fetish that developed when he was a kid. Josuke and his friends try to figure out who is killing the people of Morioh. They find out that it’s Kira, and hunt him down. They battle, and Kira escapes. Kira murders and steals the identity of a man, fleeing to his home. Kira now lives with the man’s wife and son. The son grows suspicious of his dad, as his new and strange behaviors are quite bizarre. Eventually, the son figures out that Kira is not his real dad, and Kira is aware that he found out.
Josuke and his crew break into Kira’s old home to try and find evidence. Kira’s dead father returns as a ghost and tries to sabotage their investigation. Kira’s father steals the arrow that they brought with them, and continues his way to find Kira. He finds Kira, and pierces him with the arrow. Since Kira already has a stand, we aren’t sure if he will earn another stand or if it will enhance his abilities. We find out that the arrow gave his stand even more power, and Kira is now able to reverse time. The son tries to find Josuke and his friends to tell them that he knows who Kira is. Eventually, after torturing the son by rewinding time over and over, they defeat Kira and he dies by getting run-over by an ambulance. I personally find Diamond is Unbreakable to be one of my favorite parts from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. I love the art style and animation they went with for the part. The plot is also very interesting and even though it was a serial killer villain trope, his goal wasn’t to kill all people or end the world like previous villains, but to just casually kill and live a peaceful isolated life.
Part 5(Golden Wind) takes place in Italy, following Girono Giovanna, the son of Dio Brando. Giorno joins the mafia because he wants to take it down. He no longer wants drugs to be sold on the streets and have innocent people killed. We learn that his mother left Dio and remarried an abusive man. Girono’s mother was also pretty absent in his life, choosing the man over her son. Giorno forces himself to be let into the mafia and joins at the bottom of the pyramid. He joins team Buccirati. Giorno and the leader of the team, Bruno Buccirati, make an agreement to take out the mafia from the bottom up. The other members are not aware of this. Team Buccirati is tasked with retrieving the Boss’(the head of the Mafia) daughter, Trish, as he wants to have his daughter with him so she can be safe. Nobody knows the true identity of the boss, not even his daughter, as she grew up without him around. Along their journey, they battle enemy stand users, who try to get in the way of their goal.
Another team that is part of the mafia, called La Squadra, does not know the true reason why Buccirati is headed to the boss. They do not like the boss, and also want him dead as well. They had lost members of their team to the carelessness of the boss. La Squadra tried to stop Buccirati from getting to the boss, but ultimately failed. The only one left alive in La Squadra was the head of the team, Risotto. Team Buccirati complete their mission, and Bruno takes Trish with him while everyone else stays behind waiting. Bruno figures out that the boss does not want his daughter to be safe, but wants to kill her. He wants her dead because he wants no one to know his true identity. Bruno fights him with his stand, but technically dies(Bruno is almost like a zombie throughout the rest of part 5, but still has a conscious brain. Giorno is the only one who notices these odd behaviors from Bruno). We are revealed that the boss also has a stand, King Crimson(reference to the band, King Crimson). He is able to see a few seconds into the future, so he always knows what move his enemy has next.
We are now introduced to the character Doppio. Doppio is the alter personality of the boss. It is revealed that the boss had Dissociative Identity Disorder(D.I.D.). This isn’t an accurate depiction of the disorder, granted it was written in the 90’s when there was little known research on the subject. Team Buccirati is also contacted by an unknown but familiar person, asking them to meet him at the colosseum in Rome. On their way there, they run into Doppio, not having a clue that it’s the boss. Risotto from La Squadra also returns, and figures out Doppio is the boss. He and Doppio battle, but Risotto dies. Team Buccirati runs into Doppio again, and Doppio kills one of the members. When they reach Rome, we are meeted with an old friend. A Character, Polnareff, from part 3(Stardust Crusaders) makes an appearance and warns the team that the boss is trying to get the arrow. Polnareff has the arrow with him and states he had found the arrow and pierced his stand with the arrow, making his stand too powerful. The boss wants the arrow to be the most powerful stand user, so he can stay at the top of the mafia. This is when the boss, his name finally revealed, makes his appearance, Doppio switching to Diavolo. Diavolo tries to kill Polnareff, but Polnareff stabs his stand with the arrow again. The stand switches everyone’s souls into different bodies. They all battle and Girono, stabs his stand Gold Experience with the arrow, now called Gold Experience Requiem. He uses G.E.R. to put Diavolo in an infinite death loop, so Diavolo will continue to die over and over again. Girono becomes head of the mafia and Bruno finally dies in peace once the souls are returned to their bodies.
Golden Wind was another amazing part. The storyline is different from the rest and the characters and very likable and relatable. This anime has never failed to make me bored or make me cringe at it. I always found myself enjoying each episode and it has become such a comfort show. The fandom is really awesome and everyone is so nice. I would choose to watch this over anything else. I could never get sick of it.
