This song is one of the most heart shattering and influential songs off of her newest hit album Midnights. Despite the efforts of a contrasting poppy culture, the true meaning of the song relies on the chorus, and focuses on lyrics. Swift echoes her past lovers throughout this song, telling the tale of heartbreak and the differences in such relationships.
In her debut of this song, a remix of her vocals are presented to the listeners. However, in her most recent cover of this song, she is accompanied by playing the piano and acoustically singing this song. The chords harmonize and seethe the pain that she stresses throughout the song. The haunting G sharps, synchronizing with E flats dedicate the emotion of the words slipping from her lungs.
From the general public’s opinion on Swift, arising from immature boys who often call her names, insinuating that she can never keep a boyfriend, insisting that all of her songs are the same, based on different boys with the same scenarios. Swift has always been the victim of misogyny for these and other reasons.

The originality of this song likely stems from one of her former exes Taylor Lautner, aka Jacob Black from the Twilight Saga. Her references, signifying “Midnight,” “Moonlight,” and “Sunlight,” revolve around Lautner, who was mainly present during the New Moon and Eclipse movies, from the saga. This time perfectly matches the timeline of their relationship during the 2000’s. Swift writes about how she strayed away from the unconditional love that he was giving her, instead she was only focused on her career success. Fans have other theories on the heart shattering lyrical masterpiece, hinting that the song could also be about Tom Hiddleston, who is on his way to fatherhood with his fiancé. The interpretation of her writings are made so fan’s can believe and listen to the song how they wish. Swift always leaves Easter eggs for her fans to solve, debate, and pursue. Swift continues to be a muse, and a musical representation of a beautiful mystery unfolding in front of us, as she is Midnight Rain.
