Angels Like You

By Julie Jaworski

Miley Cyrus is well known for her role of Hannah Montana where she played a girl who had two identities, a celebrity and a normal high school girl. This role lasted a while with movies coming after the show. Once this show ended, she pursued her solo career. Being on a children’s show for so long, once she got the freedom from it she went through many phases.

Her music has been extremely successful! She has about 10 albums released. One very successful album is titled Plastic Hearts. There are about 15 songs on this album. Angels Like You, the third song on this album, is a very popular song. There is a very deep meaning behind the lyrics that fans deciphered. This song is about past relationships Miley has been in, and it sounds to be a very self critical song.

The chorus discusses Miley’s knowledge that this person is wrong for her, that she’s going to wish she never met them once it’s over. She also mentions how misery loves company. Misery loves company in simpler terms is based on someone who enjoys putting their problems on other people, as long as they are heard they will use one for company. This chorus is Miley admitting she is aware of how toxic the love she has been in was and how it changed the way she loves.

Later, Miley sings about taking off clothes and pretending it’s fine, as a little more hurt won’t kill her. This set of lyrics is implying a physical relationship where Miley feels this type of intimacy is the only thing holding the relationship together, but she is willing to continue to feel used in this way to keep this relationship.

There are many songs on this album that discuss toxic relationships, which is what ultimately gave it so much success. There are many relatable experiences sung throughout.
